AIR-DRIVEN RBC
In the late 1970’s, Autotrol Corporation developed an air-driven Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC). Air cups were added to the periphery of the RBC media and an air header was placed on the tank floor, just offset from the centerline of the RBC. Diffused air was captured by the air cups, which caused the RBC to rotate. Air-driven RBCs gained quick acceptance by the wastewater and water treatment industry.
ORIGINAL FLEXIBLE CAP DIFFUSERS
The early air-driven RBCs were supplied with coarse bubble diffusers. However, after the first or second year of operation, Autotrol began receiving complaints that the air-driven RBCs were either loping or stopping in the water. The problem was investigated and traced to diffuser failure. The failed flexible caps were found to have plugged air holes, torn air release orifices or had been completely blown off the diffuser base.
FLEXCAP DIFFUSER SOLUTION
After researching other available diffusers, Autotrol determined that none met the combined needs for a low profile, truly non-clogging, low cost and maintenance-free coarse bubble aeration diffuser. They decided to design and develop a new diffuser that would meet the wastewater and water treatment industries’ needs:
#1. Eliminate plugging by settling of debris
Air Release Points were moved from the top of the cap to the underside of the diffuser cap.
#2. Eliminate plugging due to Floc and Calcium Carbonate Build-up
Air Release Points were positioned at the interface of the Polypropylene base and the EPDM cap. As the cap moved up and down on the base, a self-wiping action occurred, which automatically cleaned the air release area.
#3. Eliminate cap blow-off…
Fingers were molded to the base and fit into the pockets molded in the cap.
Flexcap Redesign Test Results: The Flexcap Diffuser will not plug, the cap will not tear and the cap will not blow off the base. Their solution-based design was patented and made available for sale in the mid-1980s.
BUSINESS ACQUISITION
In 1986, Mooers Products Inc. purchased the Flexcap business, along with the patent and molds. From that time, they have continued selling Flexcap™ diffusers and coarse bubble aeration systems around the world – without a single complaint or problem!
